Morgantown

Wouldn't it be cool to drive a car with your town's name as the license plate? Spotted in Morgantown, West Virginia which is about 400 miles or 7 hours driving distance from Toronto.

Mississauga Garden Council (AKA Pretty Flowers)

On the weekend I went to the Mississauga Garden Council, now called the Riverwood Conservatory.

A picture of a deer I saw as soon as we pulled in.

Some nice purple flowers

Homemade Burgers

Last week a friend from work told me how to make homemade burgers (I talk about burgers at work because I have nothing better to do). Anyway, here is the recipe

Note the crappy style of the recipe - there are no measurements at all; I was told to add the stuff as I felt it. This is proof that it was given by a guy not a girl:

Some beef
A dash of ketchup
A bit of worstershire sauce
Bit of bread crumbs
An egg
Lotsa mustard
Spoonful bbq sauce
A little salt
Some pepper
Couple cloves of garlic

After mixing everything together in a bowl, I made patties and stuck em on the BBQ for a couple of minutes. Flip once, and stick them on a bun.

As shady as the recipe was, it turned out decent:

Thanks!

Review: Packaged Sushi

A few days ago, I was so hungry at night and there was nothing in the fridge. After dismissing the twenty or so packets of instant noodles in the pantry, I decided to go to Metro supermarket and try their pre-packaged sushi.

Of course I hadn't even the faintest hope of this tasting remotely decent or authentic; I was just hoping it would curb my hunger till the morning.

Turns out, packaged sushi is not that bad after all. They had five flavors:

1. California rolls
2. Vegetarian
3. Salmon rolls
4. Non-raw

All of these were going for $6.95 + tax. I got the California rolls, because I don't like cooked fish in sushi, and I had had Salmon rolls at a sushi restaurant last time.

★★ (out of ★★★★).

Beer

While the US is a fairly conservative country (compared to Canada), you still see some weird stuff like alcohol being sold in convenience stores.

Here in Canada, alcohol is only sold in non-beer/wine stores.

Restaurant Review: Double Double Pizza

Double Double Pizza & Wings (doubledouble.ca)
Burgers, pizza, wings, chicken

3095 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, ON L5A Open till 3:00 AM; Open 7 Days a Week

My brother and I got hungry at 3:00 AM a couple weeks ago, so we decided to find something to eat. I was really craving sushi, but unfortunately no sushi place was open at that time in the night. Our search took us all the way to the center of Mississauga, where we found this place, which was open.

Food Taste:

The pizza was OK; we got the deal with two medium pizzas with three toppings and wings and garlic bread. To be honest, I probably wouldn't feed the garlic bread to even my dog (if I had one). It tasted pretty bland/hard and maybe it was undercooked or just plain old.

As for the pizza, I got the chicken, hot peppers and olives pizza, while my brother got pepperoni. Technically, chicken counts as two toppings, but the guy was nice to us and gave it to me anyway. Wings were REALLY good, at 3:00 AM, and even the day after. Topping selection for the pizzas was really thorough, especially with regards to the meats (pepperoni, salami, ham, sausage, hot sausage, beef, chicken, turkey bacon, etc).

Wait time was moderate for our order size and time of day.

Cost:

$$$$ out of $$$$
For the crappy tasting pizza, this place was pretty expensive.

Stars:

★★ (only because it was open late and buffalo wings were decent)

Visit Again:

There are many other places open at 3:00 AM in the morning. If I have to drive to the middle of Mississauga anyway, then I might as well go to a pizza place which tastes better...

So the verdict is NO

HDR Field

As much as I hate HDR, I had to play with it with my new lens(es).

Here is one of the better resulting images. Unfortunately, all photos were taken handheld as I forgot my tripod at home, so they had to be aligned using software. Also, the noise was removed using Photoshop, rather than a "real" noise removal software, so the pictures are not the cleanest.

Brand New Redesign

Consider it my Fourth of July present ()....a website redesign.

This is much more than a simple cosmetic update; there are lots of changes both under-the-hood and feature-wise, in addition to the obvious new look and color theme.

Here are some of the highlights:

New search- Start typing in the search box, which is located on the top of every page, and it starts giving you suggestions based on tags! Go ahead, try it!

More prominent Status updates - Status updates are now in a larger and easier to read font and are at the top (rather than at the side).
Connectivity to Twitter; the status updates come directly from Twitter, and there is also a 'follow me' link.

New Logo - A cleaner and more easier to read logo...
New favicon! - ...and a new favicon to go along with it!

Font Change - The font is easier to read because it is Gerogia and Lucida, rather than Arial and Times New Roman of before. It is also a larger size and a contrasting color (dark brown).

Wider layout - The side is 1040 pixels wide now, rather than the 700 of before.

Simplified navigation - There are only three navigation buttons at the top now, which cover the functionality of the five buttons of the old design.

Color theme - The color scheme has been changed to be easier on the eyes, faster to load the page, and to improve the aesthetics of the blog.

Firefox-optimized - While it still looks great on IE, Safari and other browsers, the blog has these rounded corners on Firefox

About section - A Quickbits information section has been added to the about page.

Archives page - The archives page is now easier to follow, because it shows only the relevant information. Hidden info can be expanded by clicking on the plus icons.

The cost for all these features is that the site is Javascript heavy.
It will complain if you have Javascript turned off and some functionality will be lost that way.

We Stand on Guard for Thee

The following are all shots of fireworks. All fireworks were shot from the Macdonald Cartier Bridge here, using a 50mm prime lens, which I soon learned was too long for the job. Even the kit lens (18-55mm) would have been better

O Canada

A boy, on his father's shoulders, takes a photo.

Pont Alexandra; Alexandra Bridge connecting Ontario and Quebec

Look at the curves on this thing!

Graffiti on bridge

Detail of the architecture of Alexandra Bridge

Where does the yellow line lead you?
I really would've liked to have no other people in this photo, but unfortunately that's not possible on July 1st.

A mother carries her daughter in Parc Jacques-Cartier in Gatineau, QC.

A family in Gatineau.
As I am uploading this, this picture is looking crappier and crappier. Nothing special about it...

What are you lookin' at?

Red Flower Girl squinting in the sun!
This is some VERY nice bokeh for the 70-300 lens, considering that it's not even stopped all the way down.

The Canadian Air Force's show!

The Flying Canucks.
This guy is a three-time Olympic snowboarder.

Woman waiting for concert.
I loved the colors on her dress. Wonder what she is thinking...

Very Canadian.
A mother wears three flags in her hair bun!

Topless in the sun!

True Canadian love!
White guy, brown girl. And 70-300 lens's crappy image quality.

A girl looks at the concert (featuring Shania Twain among others)

Flag Waving
K'Naan, a Somalian-Canadian hip-hop artist, got the crowd to wave flags.
Unfortunately I couldn't get the shot I wanted because the 70-300 focuses SLOW as heck.
