New Blog Design

I am redesigning the blog to look more simple and to be more functional.
Moreover, the blog will be based on a MySQL database, which (practically) means that more features can be added, such as : search, labels/categories, better commenting, working RSS feed, better archives, etc. However, this is a massive process, which requires writing both the back-end of the blog (the DB and code which will spit out the pages to your browser), the front-end (which is what you see in the picture below), and the "side-end" (which is how I will write new posts).

Hopefully, this will be done by the end of December this year.

Gulf News

I submitted this picture of lamps at some hotel in Dubai (the one beside the 7 star hotel) to the Gulf News Reader Pictures section.
That section publishes about twenty reader pictures every week from around the Gulf area. Commonly, pictures of construction workers, traffic violators, sunsets and the like are published, but artistic ones show up from time to time also.

Blockbuster

Though Blockbuster is dying both here and in the United States, why does it not exist in Pakistan/the Middle East?
Here are some of the reasons I came up with:

  • a) Pirated movies are extremely prevalent. When you can buy movies for a dollar, why go rent them?
  • b) Multicultural society demands a very wide selection (only applies to the M.E.). English-speaking Western expats, non-English Western expats, Pakistanis, South Indians, North Indians, and many, many more.
  • c) Trust issue. You can't trust, as a store-owner, the customers to return the product, and without credit cards, there is no guarantee on your merchandise.
  • d) TV in Pakistan is very different from the US/Canada. Half the channels are 24/7 movies. Why rent when you can watch for free?
  • e) With broadband, downloading is faster and even here (Canada), Blockbuster is slowly dying.

Enoc

This cartoon tries to show the (apparently) failing attempts of Enoc gas station to start self serve.

Among the host of problems with their self serve, the major ones are:

  • Soaring temperatures (summer) are a bad time to start this service
  • Cash only
  • Loss of jobs for the employees
  • And the biggest one: SAME PRICE for self- and full-serve

Katy Perry, Part 2

Now, what did I say three days ago?

Now when you do this crap, wouldn't people get more interested in the song, and thus want to listen to it more, thereby leading to further "corruption of society"?

Well, guess what happened? Exactly what I said!

Controversial Katy Perry hit single unavailable

By Kevin Scott, Staff Reporter

Dubai: There has been a huge demand in the UAE for Katy Perry's controversial hit single "I Kissed a Girl".

Gulf News reported earlier this week that several radio stations had decided against playing the song because it contains lyrics that depict sexuality, lesbianism and promiscuity.

However, several radio stations are continuing to play the song and some residents have been making enquiries about where to purchase the single.

The manager of Virgin Megastores in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates told Gulf News on Thursday they had been inundated with requests for the song, which is not available anywhere in the country.

Gulf News Broadcasting has decided against playing the song, which "contains lyrics that are quite sensitive to local culture".

Katy Parry's parents, who are both evangelical Christian preachers, have reportedly described the song as "shameful and disgusting".

Gulf News' website has been contacted by numerous people who have found the song offensive, while others are unsure about what all the fuss is about.

Cartoon

Since I have started reading the Gulf News online, I might as well have political cartoons to voice my opinion on things.

I think it is stupid that one must leave the country (if only for an hour) to renew their work visa, or to convert their tourist (not "visit", "tourist") visa to an employment visa.

Katy Perry single smacks of controversy in UAE

Started reading this newspaper (gulf news) because I read it in the summer in the UAE and I liked it. It is a cross between the traditional newspaper and a tabloid, while keeping eloquent yet simple language, and covering news in quite a different (and likable) fashion as compared to the Toronto Star. Since the next school year I won't have any newspaper in hard copy (and the Hamilton Spectator is not a newspaper), I decided that I might as well read this paper, online. Too bad the PDF version is not available.

Dubai: A new music single receiving airplay in the UAE has provoked controversy for containing lyrics that depict sexuality, lesbianism and promiscuity.

US singer/songwriter Katy Perry's recent hit I Kissed a Girl, criticised by several activists and social commentators around the world for its content, has been met with disapproval from residents and intellectuals living in the UAE.

Dr Mouza Ghubash, an Emirati sociologist, on Monday expressed her concern at the song's arrival in the UAE, saying it formed part of a wider problem facing youth culture in the Arab world.

She told Gulf News: "This song reflects the kind of relationship and behaviour that is common in Western societies and that can also be found as a new phenomenon in Arab culture. Of course, we refute such ideas and songs but at the same time we cannot avoid them. We must ensure our youngsters concentrate on their education - with the help of their families, teachers and lecturers, to protect them from imitating other Western cultures.

"UAE society is so open these days and great pressure is placed on the country's decision-makers, such as the Ministry of Education, to preserve our national identity."

The lyrics of I Kissed a Girl, the current UK number one and third in the US singles chart, include: "I kissed a girl and I liked it, the taste of her cherry chap stick; I kissed a girl just to try it; hope my boyfriend don't mind it."

Several radio stations in the UAE have been playing the song during their broadcasts over the last few days but others have decided to err on the side of caution.

Fiona Winterburn, Head of Music at Gulf News Broadcasting, said: "We've listened to the song but have so far decided against playing it because we realise the lyrics are quite sensitive to local culture and could offend some of our listeners."

Gulf News spoke to several UAE residents yesterday to see what they thought of the song.

Abdullah Julfar, an undergraduate student of UAE nationality, said he found the song very offensive towards his cultural and religious values.

"I think there should be some sort of social responsibility in the media to stop such ridiculous songs from being played," he said.

Mona Mezzel, a Palestinian undergraduate student, said she hated the song: "Avoiding music, books, and movies should always be a personal choice and not an enforced rule. I just find the song utterly useless."

Ahmad Saed, a Jordanian salesman, said he thought it was "absolutely pathetic and disgusting" that such lyrics were made into a song.

"Songs, unfortunately nowadays, contain excessive sexual undertones. I don't find it offensive to my values but I find it offensive to my intellectuality and to the art of music," he said.

Now when you do this crap, wouldn't people get more interested in the song, and thus want to listen to it more, thereby leading to further "corruption f society"? But I digress; they are a "Muslim country" lol.

Working Hard

The view from the window of my uncle's apartment.
The Indian laborers are working tirelessly in the unbearable Emirati heat and humidity around midday.

Memories at the dentist's office in Jumeira...

Aussie Lady: "We can't come for the next appointment in July because we are going to Australia for summer holidays."
(Chubby) British Receptionist: "Enjoy your trip!"
Aussie lady: "Yep. Should be back in the beginning of August (now!), and Ramadan would begin in two weeks time, no?"
(Chubby) British Receptionist: "Yes, I believe Ramadan begins at the end of August sometime."
Indeed chubby receptionist, indeed.
